Information for visitors from other UK HE Institutions

SCONUL

University of West London is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme. 

In most cases, eligible undergraduate students will be given access for reference only, with no borrowing rights. Academic staff, most postgraduate students and part-time, distance learning and placement students are entitled to limited borrowing rights.

In order to use UWL libraries under the terms of this scheme, you will first need to complete the online application form. If your application is approved you will be sent a confirmation email from your home institution. Please allow for up to 7 days for your application to be processed, and note that your application may be rejected if you have outstanding fines or overdue loans at your home institution.

Your first visit

Any student wishing to use the UWL Library through the Sconul Access scheme is required to register with us as a UWL Library Sconul Access user. You must bring with you a valid library or student ID card for your home institution and a copy of the email you will have received from your home institution granting permission to use the schemeThis initial visit must be during Library staffed hours as advertised on the library website.  You will be refused entry if you arrive outside of staffed hours.

Subsequent visits

Any student wishing to use the UWL Library through the SCONUL Access scheme is permitted to use our facilities at any time including overnight during term time 24/7 opening as long as you enter the building before 21.30.  You will only be allowed access with the following pieces of ID which you are required to keep with you at all times, and to show to a member of UWL staff upon request.

  • Your home institution library or student ID card
  • The UWL Library Card issued on your initial visit which must be visible at all times.

You will not be allowed entry to the UWL Library after 21.30 during 24/7 periods even if you have the required permissions.

 

M25 Scheme

Staff and researchers from participating members of the M25 Consortium who are not also SCONUL members (see above) are entitled to limited borrowing rights at UWL libraries on production of a valid M25 Scheme card together with their home library or institutional ID card.

Partnership Institutions

Students and staff of institutions in partnership with University of West London may be entitled to access some UWL library resources as defined by the contract currently in place between the University and the partnership institution. Please note it is the responsibility of the partnership institution itself to provide primary access to appropriate resources for any particular course of study undertaken there.

Information for local residents

Residents of the London Boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow are allowed to access the Library under the following conditions:

  • Access is for residents of Ealing and Hounslow who are over 18 years of age.
  • Access is for Reference Use only with no borrowing facilities.
  • Entry to the Library is only available during regular Library staffed hours and not overnight during periods of 24/7 opening.
  • You agree to follow the UWL Library Customer Charter
  • You agree to follow instruction regarding emergency evacuation at all times.
  • Wi-fi access as a UWL guest is available but at the present time we are unable to offer printing or copying services.

Your first visit

If you are a resident of the London Boroughs of Ealing or Hounslow and wish to use the UWL Library you are required to register with us for UWL Library Visitor membership. You must bring with you a valid form of ID and proof of address plus a passport sized photograph. This initial visit must be during Library staffed hours as advertised on the library website.  You will be refused entry if you arrive outside of staffed hours.

Valid forms of ID include:-

  • Passport
  • Drivers licence
  • National ID card
  • Bank or credit card
  • Freedom photo card
  • Forces ID card
  • Police/customs/home office warrant card

At this first visit, a member of Library Staff will register you as a Visitor Member and you will be given a membership card which you will need to bring with you each time that you use the Library and show to any member of Library or University staff upon request.

Subsequent visits

Once you have registered as a Library Visitor you are entitled to use our facilities for up to one year at any time including overnight during term time 24/7 opening as long as you enter the building before 21.30.  You will only be allowed access under the following terms

  • You sign our Visitors Register at Reception on each visit.
  • You carry the UWL Library Visitor Card issued on your initial visit which you are required to keep with you at all times, and to show to a member of UWL staff upon request.
